Hilly areas of south-western peninsula of Haiti on
the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean.

===Description:===
A large solitary pinnate palm with a
"shuttlecock" type leaf arrangement.

===General:===
Becoming very endangered in the wild,
with less than 30 plants left in habitat.
The plant is used extensively by the locals;
the palm nut is a good source of fat and
is used as a food and cooking oil,
while the trunk is sometimes used in construction
because of its durability.
