S. eriopus in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Stangeria is a monotypic genus and is most closely related to the Australian genus Bowenia, with which it forms the family Stangeriaceae. The genus is named in honour of Dr. William Stanger, a former surveyor-general of Natal who collected the first live plants.
