Distribution & Habitat:[edit]

Found in dry scrubland (caatinga) in the eastern Brazilian state of Bahia, at altitudes above 250 m.

Description:[edit]

An acaulescent (stemless) palm with very tough, leathery, upright, dark green, glaucous leaves that get to about 2m tall.

General:[edit]

The fruit pulp is edible with a sweet, pleasant flavor, and is often consumed locally.

Culture:[edit]

Sunny, sandy, well drained position. Drought and frost tolerant. Very rarely seen in cultivation.
