It grows in Andean cloud forest from Panama to Bolivia at up to 2000 metres altitude.
Description:[edit]
A spectacular palm to 25 metres high with a smooth, thin, slightly swollen trunk, black stilt roots and a long, bluey/gray crownshaft. It has a crown of up to 6 very large plumose leaves than can be up to 5 metres long and which have long, stiff leaflets.

Renowned as difficult to grow, it demands very high humidity year round, but can withstand quite cool conditions.
